Romania’s demand for electricity is steadily growing and this trend is expected to continue. The country’s electricity mix is one of the most balanced in the EU, with coal, hydropower, natural gas, nuclear energy and wind power having comparable shares of capacity and power generation. However, except for wind and solar, almost all units are fairly old. This results in an average capacity to deliver only circa 7 GW to the system whilst there is an official installed capacity of 22 GW.

A challenge for Romania until 2030 is how to replace the 4,000 MW of old power generation capacities based on coal and natural gas - that must be retired for technical and environmental reasons - by new capacities, clean and cost-efficient capacities.

The country has started its turnaround towards green energy and the potential that can be generated from renewable energy sources is still unexploited.
